About ATHSS
Allen Temple Health and Social Services (ATHSS) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rooted in the Oakland community. Founded under the visionary leadership of Reverend Dr. Eunice Shaw, ATHSS was established to address critical health, social, and family needs across underserved communities.
What began as volunteer-led Anger Management group classes has grown into a full-service nonprofit, guided by a dedicated board committed to holistic community healing. Securing 501(c)(3) status allowed ATHSS to expand its reach — forging partnerships with Alameda County Probation and launching The Malachi Project to strengthen families at their core.
Today, our work remains rooted in faith, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to heal and thrive.
Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr. — Pastor Emeritus
Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith, Sr., whose steadfast spiritual support helped bring ATHSS into being, passed away in September 2025. A beloved pastor, prophetic preacher, and tireless advocate for justice, his legacy continues to inspire our work. We are deeply grateful for his founding vision and enduring impact.
